Dates for West Australian Literacy Workshops
A Structured Approach to Spelling
Many teachers are looking for a way to develop a comprehensive spelling program. This workshop has a three-pronged approach to teaching spelling:
- Explicitly teaching spelling strategies
- Developing word lists with students to enable them to transfer spelling knowledge to all writing.
- Implementing word study in a manner that takes words from context and trains students to develop spelling generalisations rather than spelling rules that don’t always work.

Guided Reading
Many teachers are expected to teach guided reading and yet have received little training to do so. Guided reading is a method to differentiate teaching reading to meet diverse students’ needs. Groups are flexible and there is a clear focus on strategy during the session. Guided reading is not each child taking turns to read aloud while other children follow. During this workshop teachers will learn how to scaffold students by introducing the book so that each student can read the text independently on the first read.
This session will clarify guided reading for teachers and ensure they know how to assess and group students, plan guided reading lessons and explicitly focus on reading strategies during the lesson. Participants will learn how to explicitly teach reading strategies to ensure children progress in reading. During the session a range of reading activities/learning centres will be introduced to ensure the teacher has uninterrupted time to take the small group for guided reading.

Guided Writing and More!
This workshop examines how to inspire students to write. We look at how teachers can demonstrate writing strategies thorough shared and modelled writing. Quick assessment that informs teaching and helps group for guided writing is addressed.
Teachers learn about the key elements of guided writing, in addition to planning and implementing a lesson. Participants have the opportunity to explore activities to involve the rest of the class while the teacher works with a small group. Many teachers postpone teaching guided writing because they think it will be too hard, however, this workshop shows participants ways to get started immediately with a successful writing program.

Reading Comprehension
Many of our students are good at ‘saying the words’ but they don’t understand what they read. This workshop outlines a variety of comprehension strategies and demonstrates for teachers how to name the strategies and then teach them through shared reading, read aloud, guided reading and small group activities.
Teachers find this workshop fun and leave the workshop with a bagful of comprehension lessons they can teach the next day without having to use any comprehension sheets. The workshop demonstrates strategies such as questioning, making connections, visualising, summarising and many more.
